"It seems a little sad, really,
that I was the girl whose sole purpose was to allow you to figure out
who you were really in love with."
Jennifer Lindley (Michelle Williams) to Dawson Leery, Dawson´s Creek, episode 14 (season 2/episode 1): "The Kiss"
-But that's just it, the butterflies never seem to accompany the right people. All the nice guys who are right for you, they never make your stomach go flip flop... -Dawsons creek
Dawson: ...Need some company?
Pacey: Actually, Joey's going to come with me. She wanted to see Andie and per our conversation last week--
Dawson: Absolutely. Nobody welcomes a Potter-Witter détente more than me. I'm glad she has somebody. It'll only help as Joey and I weave our separate ways through these pathless woods we call life.
Dawson: ...I wanted someone you could turn to, someone you could talk to. Now tell me, where is the harm in that?
Joey: Well, it just would have been nice if that someone could have mustered a shred of genuine concern, Dawson...
Dawson: Joey, that someone is in that room right now because he's got a hell of a lot more than a "shred" of concern. Joey, why are you doing this.
Joey: Doing what?
Dawson: Casting aspersions on people who obviously care about you. Would you really think that I don't want the best for you? I mean, Pacey. I mean, Pacey's a lot of things... impulsive, thoughtless, stubborn. But after everything that's happened this year, can you honestly doubt for a second that he doesn't truly care about you?
acey: What girl?
Buzz: The one you named your boat after.
Pacey: True Love isn't a person, it's an idea. An unattainable idea.
Buzz: Who's the unattainable girl?
Pacey: You just love getting under my skin, don't you?
Buzz: Have you kissed her?
Pacey: I told you, there's no girl.
Buzz: Why don't you just kiss her?
Pacey: And why don't you just shut your mouth?
Buzz: You have no problem taking a swing at a guy, but you can't tell a girl how you feel about her. Man, you're pathetic.
acey: I'm not talking about Dawson, right now. I'm talking about me. You can't keep on doing this to me, Potter.
Joey: Doing what? So I count on you and I tell you secrets and...
Pacey: And you call me in the middle of the night to pick you up. Why?
Joey: I'm sorry that I called. I thought that I...
Pacey: I'm not mad that you called me, I just want to know why you called me.
Joey: You were the first person that I thought of, Pacey.
Pacey: What does that mean, Jo?
Joey: It means that... I guess it--it means that I can talk to you, and that you're there for me...
Pacey: Don't you ever get tired of talking?
Joey: No. I don't.
Pacey: Well I get tired of talking.
Joey: I don't get tired. I don't...
Pacey: I don't want to talk anymore.
Joey: What are you trying to say, Pacey? Why are we standing out...
(Pacey moves towards Joey, takes her face in his hands, and kisses her.
Joey: Are you insane? How could you do that? How could you take some simple declaration of friendship as an invitation to just maul me, Pacey? (she shoves him again) Answer me! What were you thinking? What?
Pacey: What? I don't know. God, I mean, it--it was an impulse.
Joey: An impulse (she pushes him again)?!
Pacey: Yes, an impulse. Sudden, momentary, and believe me, fleeting.
Joey: Do you have any idea the monumental implications of that meaningless little impulse? The ripple effect that it could create on our small, but fragile universe?
Pacey: You're right, Potter. Forgive me for thinking a kiss is just a kiss.
Joey: Well it's true. A kiss is not just a kiss. Not between you and me and you know why. Dawson, remember? I mean he factors into this little hormonal meltdown.
Pacey: Meltdown?
Joey: Yeah!
Pacey: I just had a meltdown? Forgive me if I don't think that this is the worst tragedy in the history of human kind. That Pacey Witter, in a moment of impulsive, compulsive hormone induced insanity would have the nerve to kiss Joey Potter. And you let me do it. You did, you let me do it. So what, now I guess the universe begins to unravel. Well excuse me while I get in the car. (Pacey walks back to the car and Joey begins to walk the other way.) Would you get in the car, Potter?
Joey: No!
(Joey continues to walk down the road and Pacey pulls up along side her in the truck.)
Pacey: Would you just get in the car, Potter? Please?
Joey: No.
Pacey: I didn't even mean to do it. You know, this is me, Pacey, act first, think later. Okay? And now that I'm getting the chance to think about it, I take it all back. Okay? So get in the car.
Joey: No.
Pacey: Jo, it's at least another 6 miles to your house, it's freezing cold outside and if you don't get in, I'm just going to do this the whole way there. So would you get in? Please? (Joey gets in the car.) So I guess I'm to take it from your angry silence that you're not speaking to me anymore.
Joey: Nope.
Pacey: Great. Great. And how long do you plan on keeping that up?
Joey: How does indefinitely sound?
Pacey: Fine.
Joey: Fine.
Pacey: Fine.
Joey: Fine.
Pacey: You know, for a bright girl, you can be really daft sometimes. Why do you think I came here?
Joey: I don't--
Pacey: I came here to be with you! It's as simple as that. When you like somebody, proximity is a good thing, regardless of how they feel about you... or don't, as the case may be.
Joey: But I felt it.
Pacey: What?
Joey: This morning. Your arm brushed up against me in bed and... and I felt it.
Pacey: How did it feel?
Joey: Made me feel alive.
Pacey: OK. Joey, I'm going to kiss you now.
Joey: You can't.
Pacey: Jo, you can't say something like that to me and expect me not to kiss you. So that's exactly what I'm going to do. I'm going to kiss you in about 10 seconds. And if you don't want me to kiss you... Well, if you don't want me to, I guess then you're just gonna have to stop me. (walks over to her and slowly leans in to kiss her) Ten.
Dawson: ...And you think that whatever was wrong when you were with me is gonna magically get better when you're with him?
Joey: I don't know, Dawson. I don't know, ok? I just know that I... I need him.
Pacey: (reaches to touch her earrings) Where did you get those? Theyre not you. (Pacey's hand drops away from her ear, gently touching one of her loose hairs)
Joey: Why, because Im just a poor tomboy... or because Dawson gave them to me?
Pacey: Neither. (he reaches down and touches the bracelet that she's wearing) See this? This is you. Its not showy or gawdy. Its simple. Elegant. (taking her hand in his) Beautiful.
Joey: Its my moms bracelet.
Pacey: I know.
Joey: How do you know?
Pacey: Well, because you told me. Six months ago. You were wearing that blue sweater with the snowflakes that you have. You were walking down the hallway at school. I was annoying you as per usual. You said, Look, Pacey, I just found my mothers bracelet this morning, so why dont you cut me some slack?
Joey: You remember that?
Pacey: (softly) I remember everything.
oey: (shaking her head) I want to stop standing still, I want to move forward, I want to come with you.
Pacey: What about Bessie and the B&B? They need you.
Joey: Not as much as I need you, Pacey.
Joey : What was that?
Dawson : A kiss...I think.
Joey : You kissed me.
Dawson : I know
Dawson : Um.. How about we start with something very simple... Something that goes beyond this month's Penthouse Forum.
Joey : And.. Um.. what would that be Dawson?
Dawson: I would really like to hold your hand.
Joey : Okay.
Jen : Hey.
Pacey : Hey.
Jen : What are you bumming about?
Pacey : Nothing... I got a bad case of the Molly Ringwalds today...
Jen : Hmm... let me see, umm in "Breakfast Club," she gets detention... "Pretty In Pink," she gets dumped before Prom... In "16 Candles," everybody forgets about her birthday... is that it? Is today your birthday?
Pacey : Big 1-6, whoopee!
Pacey : I should be happy for them... I am happy for them...
Jen : Me too...
Pacey : No you're not...
Jen : I know.
Dawson: Andie Andie likes you.
Pacey: Andie hates me!
Dawson: When a girl hates you the way Andie hates you it really means that she likes you. Its basic kindergarten psychology.
Dawson : All Ive been thinking about lately is how much I want to take back our first kiss. How much I would pay to just let you climb through that window. I mean, who knows what would have happened, I mean maybe wed still be best friends, maybe youd still have a thing for me. I just know that I wouldnt be hurting like this. But then I think about, everything that kiss brought into my life. What it was like to look at you and know not just what you were thinking but what you were feeling because I was feeling the same thing. And then its all worth it. Its worth all the pain that Im going through. I want to regret kissing you Joey, but I cant. It was the smartest decision I ever made.
Joey : Dawson, the 2 times I fell in love on the test They were both you. I mean the first time I fell was for my friend, the Dawson I grew up with, the boy across the creek, and the second time was after we kissed. I mean you became this whole new person to me, and I fell in love all over again. I mean, just because were not together anymore does not change my feelings for you, Dawson. Its me Im unsure of.
Jack : Wait, wait! Even better! We could have a "going into the closet" party and then everybody could come dressed up as their favorite straight person.
Jen - "Hey Joey, I love your lipstick. What shade is that?"
Joey - "Wicked red. I love your hair colour. What number is that?"
Jen - "You know, now that the proverbial wedge we so fondly refer to as Dawson Leery is no longer between us, we could actually be friends... I know, I know, it's a bizarre concept, but we might find that we have something more in common than just the boy next door."
Joey - "We don't have to, like, wash each other's hair and do each other's nails, do we?"
Pacey - "Come on, Jen. I mean, it's pretty obvious that you're missing the undivided attention of our friend Dawson. Maybe feeling a little dumpers remorse?"
Jen - "You're way off."
Pacey - "Tell me, is it the possibility of losing him to somebody that suddenly makes him seem attractive?"
Jen - "You really think I'm that shallow, huh?"
Pacey - "No. I think you're that human"
"I don't want to lose you Joey, what we have is the only thing that makes sense to me." (Dawson)
Joey: When I saw you going for Jen's hand... it's not like I wanted to be the one holding your hand. I just didn't want her holding it.
Jen: Tell ya what, grams. I'll go to church with you when you say the word "penis."
Joey: So we're friends, and then we're a couple. And then friends again, and then we're a couple.
Dawson: So?
Joey: So what are we now?
Dawson: Dawson and Joey.
Joey: Do you think every Joey has a Dawson and every Dawson has a Joey?
Dawson: I hope so. For their sake.
Pacey: Whether or not I can forgive you, Andie, is not going to be what keeps us apart. What you did... Our relationship was like this beautiful thing, and I don't think you ever realized how powerful it was. You changed my life, Andie, you were that person for me. You inspired me to be a man that I'd only ever dreamt about being. When you first started to get sick, it dawned on me that I might not be that person for you. I can never go back to loving you the way I did knowing that my love wasn't strong enough the first time around. I could always forgive you, Andie, but I will never forget.
Andie: But I still love you, Pacey.
Pacey: Goodbye, Andie.
Dawson : Jo. Joey, you yourself once told me that some love stories never end. What happened to that girl?
Joey : She offered herself to the boy she loved - the boy she thought loved her back and he rejected her.
Dawson : Joey, listen to me. If we are truly meant to be, then we will find a way back to each other. It's as simple as that.
Joey : It gets easier, you know.
Andie : What does?
Joey : Being in the same room as him.
Joey: Why is he so irritating?
Andie: Well if you think about it -- I mean, he is just this big, dopey dog.
Joey: Youre right. Its like he runs through the house destroying everything in its path, and then he looks up at you like, "What do you expect, Im just a dog?"
Andie: (laughs) You know who you sound like?
Joey: Who?
Andie: Me. Right before I started dating him.
Pacey : You don't think there's a possibility that there's somebody out there who hates Joey just for being Joey, who hates the way she talks, the way she dresses, the way she chews on her lower lip.
Joey : I don't chew on my lower lip.
Pacey : Okay. Look, I'm just putting it out there
Dawson : I'm starting to forget why.
Joey : Why what?
Dawson : Why we're not together
Dawson : I see all members of the triangle are present and accounted for.
Dawson, how do I know I'm not just this security blanket for you? Something you'll keep coming back to when the world gets scary?" - Joey
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"It seems stupid now, but at the time... I wanted to tell you that I loved you." - Dawson to Joey
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in." - Pacey
"Face it, Pace, you're stuck with us." - Joey
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I'm talking about the romantic apotheosis. My first kiss with Jen is going to be just like that." - Dawson
I want you to stay." - Joey
"Excuse me?" - Dawson
"I want you to stay. There. I said it." - Joey
"Do you think maybe you could've mentioned this before I packed?" - Dawson
"And now that I've said this thing, I want you to forget it." - Joey
"Forget it? How do I forget that?" - Dawson
I expected you to say good-bye." - Joey
"Right. The good-bye scene. I come to you, heart in hand, and announce my plans. You stare at me, pained. But then the Potter sarcasm kicks in. And I walk off, never getting what I came for." - Pacey
What do you think is going to change? What scary, unfathomable thing do you think is gonna happen?" - Pacey
"I don't know, Pacey. You tell me. You've been there." - Joey
"No, I haven't. Not with you. You said you wanted us to be scared together. But you won't tell me what you're scared of... And I think you know, but you just won't say it. You won't say his name." - Pacey
"Dawson?! No, no, no - that is not fair, Pacey! You can't bring his name up every time this relationship hits a wall." - Joey
I called, Dawson, because I realized you're the one person I regret not saying goodbye to. I called because once upon a time, the only thing that really mattered to me was being your best friend. I called because I wanted you to know that despite everything that's happened and all the miles between us right now, I still think about the way it was in the beginning." - Pacey
I can't. Because I'm afraid okay? I'm afraid that I'm not good enough for you, and that I never will be. Alright? And that if I do this that you're just going to realize that you've grown way beyond me and I'm just going to lose you again." - Dawson
ANDIE: I slept with another boy. Six months ago! Even then, I knew it was wrong. I tried to explain that to you. How many times do I have to say it?
PACEY: If you wanted to sleep with him -- even for a second -- maybe it wasn't wrong after all. Maybe it was your heart telling you that I'm not the one. Because that's what my heart's telling me now. That you're not the one.
Jen: So what would you do?
Joey: The same as you. I'd get hurt... I'd get mad... I'd get confused. I'd ask people for advice. Maybe the wrong people. And then I'd wait... For him to come around.
Jen: And how long does that take?
Joey: Oh, don't go by me. I'd probably be stupid enough to wait forever.
Joey: I'm so tired of this, Dawson. I'm tired of the way we relate to one another. We spend all our time analyzing every detail of our sad little adolescent lives.
Dawson: I'll admit we know too many big words, but it's a good thing to analyze.
Joey: But it doesn't get us anywhere. It doesn't move us forward. We're in the same place we were three months ago. It's time to grow up, Dawson.
Dawson: I know. But we can...we are growing up...
Joey: No, we're not. Everyday's the same. We watch a movie -- preferably a Spielberg film -- find the appropriate life correlation and then pat ourselves on the back for being so clever. And while our perception is usually dead on, our honesty is seriously lacking... I don't wanna dance around big words anymore, Dawson. I want to be honest.
I'm gonna give you that space that you need. Just space. But that isn't going to change my feelings about you. Nothing will ever change that.
---Dawson
Mr. Potter: Well, nothing could be further from the truth. And I'm not the only one. Dawson Leery, he loves you, Joey. He's never told you?
Joey: Never
Mr. Potter: Well he does, I know it.
Joey: How?
Mr. Potter: Because he looks at you the same way your mother used to look at me. And you love him. Have you told him? You have to tell him, Joey. Don't make my mistake. Don't wait until someone you love is eaten with cancer and wasting away while you hold back the one thing they're waiting to hear.
Joey: Of all the people to see me like this, it had to be you.
Pacey: Well, you know, it's a new year. Who knows? You and I might even become friends.
Joey: Pacey, I'm upset enough as it is.
(He laughs and puts his arm around her to pull her closer.)
Pacey: Come here, Potter.
(She leans against him and finally lets herself cry.)
Pacey, Andie and Joey getting into the car]
Pacey: We shall be arriving at Capeside around 10, so place your station requests now.
Joey: (reaching for the radio) Alternative.
Pacey: (swatting her hand away from the controls) Classic rock, it is.
Joey: Just like the cops to disappear when the going gets tough.
Pacey: Well some of them do have wives and children to get home to. And besides, we're almost done here. And you know, I was thinking... you're gonna need a name for this addition when we do get finished, so a suggestion, if I may? How does the Pacey J. Witter wing strike you?
Joey: Keep talking, it'll be a memorial dedication.
Pacey: You know, Potter, sometimes your lack of gratefulness, it borders on unappealing.
Pacey: You're not listening to me. I'm being serious, but it's kind of a limited-time offer, so I just thought I'd ask you, what do you think?
Joey: Pacey, I think that if you really wanted to be having causal sex with someone right now, you'd be doing it instead of sitting here having a hypothetical discussion about it. That's what I think.
Penny: There's enough sexual tension here to power a Kiss reunion tour. I can't remember the last time I saw dancing this bad.
Dawson: Wait a minute, just because they can't dance you think that they're...
Penny: Well, it's this theory that I've developed based on years of experience. If people dance that badly, then they're usually hot for each other. The dancing doesn't lie.
Joey: What is wrong with him?
Pacey: Uh, nothing really. It's just, um, Dawson seems to think that we're doing it.
Joey: What?
Pacey: Well, you know, having sex. Getting to know each other in the biblical sense, uh...
Joey: Pacey, that's impossible. He would never think that.
Pacey: No, not under normal circumstances, but in this case, I think certain events were perhaps misconstrued...
Joey: What events?
Penny: (interruptin them) Switch!
Grams: You know you love someone when you can spend the entire night just sitting by the fire, watching them sleep.
Mitch: ...You know what I think? I think that if I were Joey and Bessie, I would consider myself very lucky to have you in my life.
Pacey: Why? Everything and everybody that I touch, I screw up, all right? You're aware of the Midas touch, right? You've heard of that? Okay, well the Midas touch, whatever that is, I got the opposite.
Mitch: Don't be so sure. I mean, look at you. You're still at it, right? You haven't given up. Pace, instead of dwelling on everything that's gone wrong this weekend, so far, um... think about what you contributed. You've put a lot of selfless work into this place, right? That is the real question. Listen, that goes to the heart of who Pacey Witter is.
Pacey: What?
Mitch: What makes you care so much?
Dawson: ...what I'm trying to say is, thank you.
Pacey: For what, man?
Dawson: For doing what I asked you to do: taking care of Joey. You really went above and beyond the call. I mean, you did something really special for her. I'm glad she has you.
Pacey: Let me tell you something, Man. It's no picnic, okay? That Potter girl, she ain't easy, alright? She's physically incapable of keeping her mouth shut for more than two seconds at a time. She's got an opinion about everything. I mean, it's uncanny, alright? So anytime you want to jump back in there, you just let me know, because I am eager to return to our regularly scheduled programming. That glib enough for you?
Pacey: ...Dawson, what say you and I invite Miss Josephine Potter to step out on the town with us tonight? Unless of course you've got prior Valentine's Day plans with college beau?
Joey: No, massive mid-term crisis.
Pacey: Excuse me? What kind of moron would rather shove his nose in a book than take his girl out for Valentine's Day?
Joey: Pacey, I know it's a hard concept for you to grasp, but some people are actually dedicated to the pursuit of academic excellence.
Joey: Some day you'll thank me, Dawson. And if Pacey insists on being the devil on your shoulder, than the least I can do is be the angel on the other.
Pacey: Fine then. Come with me, Miss sweet little angel...
Joey: But how could I not take it seriously, Pacey? And you said one harsh, nasty thing after another to me tonight. What did I really do to deserve all that?
Pacey: You didn't do anything to deserve this. The drunken lout in the corner just plead sheer frustration. I mean, honestly, do you have any idea how exhausting it is to exist on your periphery? To witness this perpetual dance that you two have? One week you're soul mates, the next week you're giving each other up for the greater good. I mean, do you think it's possible that sometime soon, you could make up your mind? Please? And on the reverence that you treat this little saga of yours with, is enough to make a guy puke.
Doug: You were in rare form tonight.
Pacey: How bad do I suck?
Doug: So what seems to be the problem?
Pacey: There is no problem, Dougie.
Doug: Oh, come on, Pacey. I found you hanging from a tree getting completely wasted.
Pacey: Huh?
Doug: So what is it, a girl or something?
Pacey: What?
Doug: Okay, so it's a girl. Who is she?
Pacey: Do you know what, Dougie? It's really not that important, okay?
Doug: Okay.
Pacey: I'll tell you something, though... She is really, really, annoying.
Doug: Yeah?
Pacey: Yeah, I mean, this girl is amazing. There is not a single subject on the face of the planet that she doesn't have an opinion about. It's mind-boggling.
Doug: Well, that certainly sounds like a nightmare.
Pacey: Well, no, I mean... It's not quite like that. I mean, you gotta understand that the girl's really smart, so she's usually right and when she argues, it comes from this really beautiful, pure place. So, I mean, how can you fight against that, you know? Especially if you're a smart-ass like me.
Doug: Is she pretty?
Pacey: Yeah, she is pretty. She is very, very pretty. She's actually the kind of pretty that gives you butterflies, you know what I mean?
Pacey: ...But look, I'm here to tell you that not everybody thinks what you did was funny.
Matt: Well, some people don't have a sense of humor. Is that your problem?
Pacey: Yeah, that's me. I'm humorless.
Matt: Hmm. What do you want?
Pacey: I want you to apologize. And then I want you to turn yourself in. And I want you to do it before the day is done.
Matt: And why would I do that?
Pacey: Because this time you just happened to mess with somebody I care about.
Pacey: Oh, hey, don't get me wrong. Don't think I ever cared here. I was only doing Dawson a favor.
Joey: Dawson?
Pacey: Yes, Dawson... looking out for you. Think back with me. Way back. You know, like the beginning of the school year? Dawson Leery returns from the big city a changed man, determined to sever ties with girl across the creek. So he asks trusted friend to look after said girl during the delicate transitional period. Trusted friend, of course he obliges, and now trusted friend gets his head handed to him on a platter.
Joey: So you guys just traded me off like some sort of baseball card? Is that what this is about?
Pacey: What?
Joey: Us! You and me. I--I thought that...
Pacey: Thought what?
Joey: I guess I thought something else, Pacey.
Joey: A.J., there are worse things than a broken heart. Like the love that you don't explore
Buzz: Is she a hottie?
Pacey: I'm not answering that.
Buzz: Come on, I'm 9. I have years before I get there. The least you can do is cough up a description.
Pacey: Okay. She's so beautiful, that every time you look at her, your knees tremble, your heart just melts, and you know right then and there, without any reservation, that there is order and meaning to the universe.
Buzz: She's a hottie.
Pacey: She is.
Buzz: Where is she?
Pacey: Right now, she's probably out having the time of her life.
Pacey: The whole thing was her fault! I mean, you know, she told me that I was the one that she thinks about. You know, me! And then she gives me this look. I mean, what was I suppose to do? Do you know how long I've been waiting for her to give me that look?
Doug: So I don't get it. She gave you the look, you kissed her, it was a good kiss. So what's the problem?
Pacey: Well, the hitting, punching and rejecting, that might be a bit of a problem.
Joey: ...And then he asked Pacey to look out for me.
Gwen: What does Pacey have to do with this?
Joey: Ah, nothing. Just...there you have it.
Pacey: I'll tell him.
Joey: No, I can't let you do that, this is my responsibility.
Pacey: Jo, it's not your responsibility. I'm the one who started this, remember? I'm the one who got you into this situation. And frankly, the only way I can save my friendship with Dawson is to be completely honest with him. So I gotta do this. All I need is one day. Just one day.
Joey: One day.
Pacey: Yes, one day. (he kisses her forehead)
Joey:... because you look upset.
Pacey: I'm upset because we haven't spoken in two weeks, and when we do the first words out of your mouth, as per usual, are about Dawson.
Dawson: Are you actually deluded enough to believe that you have something real with Joey?
Pacey: If I do, it's of her own free will.
Pacey: If it weren't for Dawson, do you think you could ever love me like that?
Joey: Like what?
Pacey: Like a soulmate.
Joey: Pacey, please don't make me do this. Don't make me choose. (Pacey walks away from her, then turns back)
Pacey: And Jo, I'll renew the lease on the wall first thing in the morning. And I understand. I do, I understand. They're no ultimatums here.
